When the car is left unused for a long time, the amount of oil in the car will often flow to the oil crankcase. Lubricants kept for a long time in a car will have the following characteristics:

Regarding color: Although when the engine is not running, the oil will not be subjected to pressure, temperature, etc., the oil will still change to a darker color due to the gradual change of oil and additives.

About quality: Oil left unused for a long time will lose quality, due to the oil’s absorption of water when it comes into contact with air.

That’s why even if your car hasn’t been used for a long time, you still need to check the oil every time you restart it. As recommended:

  • For mineral oils and semi-synthetic lubricants, you should change engine oil every 5000 km or every 6 months.
  • For fully synthetic oil, you should change the oil every 10,000 km or every 12 months.

1. Find a suitable parking place: Before checking your car’s oil, you need to find a flat place to park your car. Sloping and rough parking surfaces will make the test less accurate. After parking the car, you should turn off the engine and wait about 10 minutes for the oil to cool and settle.

3. Find the location of the oil dipstick: All cars will be equipped with an oil dipstick in the engine compartment. It will have a T-shaped or circular handle for easy removal.

4. Move the dipstick out of place and wipe it clean: Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean with a towel, then return it to the wrapper and put it back in its original position. Insert the stick until you feel the tip of the stick touching the container.

5. Take out the dipstick again and check the amount of oil: Take out the dipstick and read the amount of oil on it. Normally, the oil stick will have 2 lines min and max or full and add. If the oil level is between these two lines, it means the amount of lubricant in your car is in a normal state and can still be used. If the oil level is below the min line, it means the amount of oil in the car is very low and needs to be added immediately.
